Hey friends! Grace and Peace to you!
There have been times in my life when I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of what to do, feeling stuck, or even afraid to move forward. But it was in these moments that God gave me a little “push.” He didn’t wait for me to feel ready; instead, He nudged me into the next chapter, even when I was unsure. Looking back, I realize that those pushes were not random—they were God’s way of preparing me for my next mission. Let me share with you how I learned to trust God in the uncertainty and how His push set me up for something greater.
When You Run Away, God Redirects You
I am reminded of Jonah being swallowed by a whale. It is funny how you hear about it when preachers put it into their sermons but when you read it for yourself and have a whole new understanding, making your mouth drop to the floor. It hits different when you realize you are Jonah in the story during times like this. I literally could feel God’s hand pushing me the way He wanted me to go. I can visualize His fingers putting blocks in my path, the path I wanted to go down.
We all know Jonah’s story. He ran away from God’s call to go to Nineveh, thinking he could avoid the task. But God had other plans. When Jonah tried to flee, God sent a storm and a great fish to bring him back on course. This passage speaks to those moments in our lives when we resist God’s plan out of fear, doubt, or unwillingness. We may run, but God will always find ways to redirect us. In my life, there were moments I felt Jonah’s resistance—trying to go my own way. But God’s love wouldn’t let me stay where I was. He redirected me in ways that weren’t always comfortable, but they led me exactly where I needed to be.
You May Have Your Own Plans, But God Has Better Ones
I really did not want a new car or a new job. I was fine driving my car till the wheels rolled off. I can imagine God looking at me just shaking His head. That car was surviving on fumes and definitely not safe to drive. I was fine driving a 10 mile radius. But I knew God had plans for me that involved me needing a car. He asked me what kind of car I wanted, and when I tell you that is what I got, that is what I got! I am thinking I should have said a Maserati lol. My ultimate plan was to hide away in my apartment doing just enough.
We often create plans for our lives—whether it’s career goals, personal dreams, or other ambitions. But Proverbs reminds us that while we may make plans, it is the Lord who establishes our steps. There have been times when I had everything planned out, but God interrupted those plans to lead me to something different, something better. And in the moment, it didn’t always feel better. It felt confusing, and I wasn’t sure if I could trust Him with the direction He was taking me. But hindsight shows that God’s plan was far greater than my own.
God Speaks, Even in the Silence
I would ask for prayer from my family when I wouldn’t get paid on time and my aunt would respond, “You need a new job!” It was about the 5th time and I could hear my aunt say, “You need a new job!” So instead of asking for prayer, I began applying for jobs. It was the little things like not being paid on time, losing my health insurance and my aunt’s voice in the back of my head that made me realize, God is indeed speaking to me.
Sometimes it does feel like God is silent. But Isaiah 30:21 promises that we will hear a voice behind us, guiding us on the right path. There were moments in my journey where I felt unsure of what to do next. I prayed, but it seemed like nothing was happening. Yet, God was there all along, whispering direction, whether through a circumstance, a conversation, or a quiet moment of reflection. Eventually, I heard that still, small voice guiding me forward.
God Equips Us, Even When We Feel Unqualified
I ended up getting a teaching job, or so I thought. I was in the interview and at the end, the principal said, “Oh you won’t be teaching…” I instantly became a supervisor, coordinator, it was a leadership position. I had the job of my former supervisor without the training or experience. But they just had the feeling that I was the right one for the job. There was so much grace and mercy as I jumped into the deep end. I learned that I had to do a lot of clean up. But God sent me everyone and everything I needed to be great. I approached the fires with ease and I just let God lead. I could have been stressed or anxious, or even just quit, but I had that peace, you know the peace that surpasses all understanding.
Moses felt unqualified for the task God gave him. He doubted his ability to speak, let alone lead an entire nation. But God reminded Moses that He doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called. I have had moments where I doubted myself, where I thought, “I can’t do this, I’m not ready.” But God showed me that He equips those He calls. He doesn’t wait for us to feel ready—He gets us ready along the way.
God Prepares You for a New Mission
I published a book called Living With God In The Season of Ambiguity: For The Times In Your Life When You Do Not Know What To Do in my wilderness time. I had closed my bookstore and was sitting at home waiting on God to tell me what is next. I spent that time heavy into the word of God, in fact I read and studied the Bible in a year. It was such a transformative journey. God knew I needed Him as my foundation for what was next. Again, I didn’t want to get a new job but here I am. I realized I was on assignment when something happened in the school and my first thought was to pray and cover when others wanted to talk about it and give up. I still may not know exactly what is happening in this next area of my life but I know God has a purpose for me. And it involves me driving in a new car and a new job.
The story of Paul (Saul) is a powerful reminder that God can take us from the most unexpected places and use us for His glory. Paul was on the road to Damascus, ready to persecute Christians, when God intervened and changed his life completely. He went from a persecutor to a passionate apostle of Christ. In my own life, there have been unexpected changes, moments when God completely shifted my direction. I didn’t always understand it at the time, but looking back, I can see how God was preparing me for something new—something that aligned with His greater plan.
Trusting God’s Push in Your Life
When I look back on the times when God “pushed” me, I see how those moments shaped me. It wasn’t always comfortable, and it often came when I felt unsure. But in every instance, God was faithful. He was setting me up for something greater, even when I couldn’t see it. So if you’re feeling that push today, trust Him. You may not understand where He’s leading you, but He’s preparing you for your next mission—one that will glorify Him and bring you closer to your purpose.
I’d love to hear your stories of how God has pushed you when you were unsure. Share your testimony in the comments or reach out to me personally. Let’s encourage one another to trust God even when the road seems unclear!
