Embracing Growth: Lessons from Art and Faith

FAITH Sunday Newsletter Ep 4

In our art class, I’ve noticed a common challenge among students: the desire to throw in the towel when a drawing doesn’t turn out perfect on the first try. While working on still-life drawings, I taught them sketching techniques designed to build muscle memory and encourage mindfulness. They learned to slow down, focus, and choose one art piece that they wanted to make better. By repeatedly sketching the same subject, they developed their skills and confidence.

As believers, we often face similar struggles in our spiritual journey. Whether it’s establishing a consistent Bible study habit, praying daily, or showing love to others, it’s easy to get discouraged when we don’t get it right immediately. However, just as we practice and refine our art skills, God offers us endless grace and patience. He gives us countless opportunities to grow and strengthen our spiritual lives

I introduced a “31-Day Draw It Again” challenge to my students, encouraging them to focus on one thing they want to improve daily. They can draw the same subject from different angles and using various mediums, tracking their progress in a sketchbook.

Similarly, as we seek to deepen our Christian walk, let’s commit to achievable steps that fit within our daily lives. Just like the art challenge, these small, consistent efforts will help us grow and transform over time.

F – Focus Verse:
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."
— Galatians 6:9 (ESV)

A – Affirmation:
I am growing in grace daily. Every small, faithful step I take matters and bears fruit in God's perfect timing.

I – Insight:
Growth doesn’t often come with fireworks and fanfare. It usually happens in the quiet, unseen spaces of our lives just like in art, where unseen sketches build the artist’s skill. Your persistence in faith, prayer, kindness, and obedience are the "sketches" of your spiritual masterpiece. Trust the slow work of God in you.

T – Try It:
Journaling/Art Prompt:

  • Choose one area of your life where you want to grow.

  • Create a simple "progress sketchbook" — draw, journal, or creatively track your small efforts in that area for the next 7 days.

  • Reflect on how God might be shaping you through the process, not just the outcome.

H – Hope:
You are a work in progress, lovingly shaped by the hands of the Creator. Be patient with yourself every faithful step is a step toward His beautiful purpose for you. Pray this week:
"Lord, help me trust that small steps lead to big growth in You. Strengthen my hands and heart to keep going even when I can't see the full picture yet. Amen."
