I was always an awkward girl, I never really fit in. People knew me as “_______ friend”. I was always the supporting character and I was fine with that. Although a supporting character, I stood out like a sore thumb. I was tall, dark, and chunky. I was 5’7 in the 5th grade! I loved hanging outside during the summer and so people noticed how dark I got. I hated being the center of attention, especially for all the bad reasons.
I always, however, was a happy, bubbly, child and continued that way even after many traumatic experiences. I look back and can see God keeping me. I had to learn the hard way that just because God allows it, doesn’t mean that is what He wants, but the comforting thing was that He didn’t allow the enemy to take me over and that He was right there with me.
I feel like my life helped me to be ok with being the “best supporting character” before I even realized that I only wanted to be the best supporting character. I hated to strive for titles and accolades. There were times when I felt like I had to, but it just never felt organic and it went against my grain. I was stressed, my hair was falling out, I just wanted to go to work and go home to do my own thing.
One of the biggest struggles though was in the dating world. I never looked like the girls that guys desired. I remember when I was married, and ran into some friends from high school and they were so shocked that I was married, I was like why couldn’t I be married? They were weird. :)
I was different.
It was annoying.
I was ok with it.
Fast forward…
I rededicated my life to God and began to study the Bible for myself. I studied the Bible in a year. God set me apart for something. I sat in my house for 2 years, the transformation was real. There were soooo many verses that backed up how I felt, encouraging me to be ok with being the least. In fact, that is what God wants, Luke 9:48 – "For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”
“Main Character Energy”
The world tells us to chase the spotlight, to seek recognition, to embrace “Main Character Energy.” But the Christian life is different. We are not called to seek our own glory. Everything we do should glorify Christ.
I kept hearing and seeing this phrase, and it never sat right in my soul. Neither the term “Boss”. I saw a lot of women seeking that title and trying to get others to join them. As I matured in my Christian walk, studying the Word of God, I knew that the main character CANNOT be me!
We Are Called to Glorify Christ, Not Ourselves
"He must increase, but I must decrease." – John 3:30
Culture teaches us to promote ourselves, to seek admiration, and to make everything about our journey. But as Christians, our lives are not about us—they’re about Jesus. Every gift, talent, and opportunity we have should point people to Him. When we try to steal the spotlight, we take away from the One who truly deserves it.
Now do not get me wrong, I am not saying we are to “shrink” ourselves. The gifts, character, skills, God has blessed us with will always make us stand out because we were never meant to fit in but we cannot take ownership of these gifts. We cannot take the credit.
Christ Is the True Main Character
"All things were created through Him and for Him... that in everything He might be preeminent." – Colossians 1:16-18
There’s only one true main character in this story of life: Jesus. We are not the stars of the show. We are here to support His mission, to follow His leading, and to be reflections of His love. My life, your life, and every other life only make sense when Christ is at the center.
A phrase that resonates loudly is, “The Bible is not about us, it is for us”. We can sometimes read the Bible in a self-centered way. Once exposed to that, I began reading the Bible differently and that made a huge difference.
Serving Others Is the Greatest Role
"Whoever would be great among you must be your servant... For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve." – Mark 10:43-45
The world tells us that success means having people admire us. But Jesus showed us that true greatness comes from serving others. Even though He had every right to demand worship and attention, He chose humility. He washed feet. He healed the broken. He laid down His life. If the King of Kings chose servanthood, why should we chase the throne?
God Exalts Those Who Are Humble
"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you." – James 4:10
It’s human nature to want to be seen, valued, and appreciated. But when we chase personal glory, we set ourselves up for disappointment. God calls us to humility, and when we embrace that, He is the one who lifts us up—on His terms, in His timing, and for His purposes.
When I continued to read the Bible, a revelation came to me, I don’t need to exalt myself. So many kings exalted themselves and God humbled them. But when God exalts… that’s huge. I struggled with this in my art and in my business, when I used to chase the numbers of likes, subscribers, shares, etc. I have decided to let God do His thing with me and the gifts that He has given me.
Our Purpose Is to Make Disciples, Not Fans
"Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." – Matthew 5:16
Social media has trained us to seek followers and likes. But Jesus didn’t call us to gain fans—He called us to make disciples. Our light is meant to shine, but not so people can look at us—it’s so they can see Him. Every act of love, kindness, and faithfulness should point others to the real Main Character of this life: Christ.
People are attracted to the light. I wrote about a woman who was drawn to me, well the light in me. She was seeking the Light, and the Holy Spirit led her to me. She shared so much with me and I was able to pray with her. It was confirmation for me that I was and am doing what God is calling me to do.
As I continue this journey of embracing and loving the best supporting character as a disciple for Christ, I pray that His light just gets brighter and brighter with every step and word. I know I do not need 1,000 people in my Bible Studies. I don’t need 1,000 shares. If it is just one person I can be a blessing to, I will take it!
To GOD BE THE GLORY!
Best Supporting Character Challenge: 5 Days of Reflection & Action
Instead of striving for the spotlight, take five days to intentionally shift the focus to Christ. Each day includes a reflection, a creative activity, and an action step to help you embrace the role of the best supporting character in God’s story.
Day 1: Identity Check – Who’s at the Center?
Read: Colossians 1:16-18
Reflect: Who is truly at the center of your life—yourself or Christ? Write a short journal entry or letter to God, surrendering any desire for personal glory and acknowledging His preeminence in your life.
Create: Draw or design a visual representation of your life with Christ at the center. This could be a mind map, a timeline, or an abstract piece that represents your journey of surrender.
Day 2: The Power of Hidden Service
Read: Matthew 6:1-4
Reflect: Jesus teaches that true acts of service should be done in secret, without seeking praise. Write down a few ways you can serve someone this week without them knowing.
Take Action: Do at least one anonymous act of service today—whether it’s leaving an encouraging note, paying for someone’s coffee, or praying for someone without them knowing.
Day 3: Humility in Words and Actions
Read: Philippians 2:3-5
Reflect: Are there ways you seek validation in your words or actions? Write a list of ways you can shift your focus from self-promotion to Christ-promotion.
Creative Twist: Instead of posting something about yourself on social media today, highlight someone else’s work, testimony, or impact, or simply share a verse that points to Jesus.
Day 4: Giving Without Recognition
Read: 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
Reflect: Generosity is about the heart, not the amount. Write about a time when you gave (money, time, effort) and truly felt the joy of giving without expecting anything in return.
Create: Make a giving jar or envelope and place it somewhere visible. Commit to putting something in it (money, prayer requests, kind notes for others) throughout the week and giving it away when it's full.
Day 5: Living as the Best Supporting Character
Read: John 3:30
Reflect: What would your life look like if you fully embraced the role of the “best supporting character” in God’s story? Write a declaration of humility and surrender, committing to making Christ the main character of your life.
Take Action: Film a short video or write a post about what you’ve learned this week and how you’re embracing a Christ-centered life. Share it as a testimony to encourage others, or keep it as a private reflection.
